The Daily Journey

Everyday I exit my home,

Brooklyn’s streets feel like a poem.

The doors of the F train are opened there,

I jump in, feel the crowd.

People sit close, some laugh, some sleep

the train gets faster through the tunnels deep

I jump on the A train in Jay Street;

it is packed and swift

The windows fade to darkness, then light draws near.

The subway shakes, feels just right.

At 145th street, I climb the stairs

City air hits I forget my cares.

A ten-minute walk is not too far

Passing the shops with the coffee and old cars,

Sidewalks are busy, people all around

Heavy trees are all over Hamilton Heights;

Their shade feels nice in the morning light.

The gates at City College are strong and wide;

I walk in feeling proud inside.

Classrooms waits with desks and friends;

My college day starts, the journey ends.

This trip’s my life from home to class;

The F train, A train, and I am fast.

Some days I feel tired; my legs feel slow,

Yet every step helps me grow.

My route is from Brooklyn to Harlem,

And I know it like the back of my hand;

This city is mine, and I am here to stay.

My journey is simple from  home to school,

Everyday I make it through.

Reflection

For my poem, I chose to write a narrative poem because I wanted to tell the story of my daily commute from my home to City College. So when I’m presenting to the class it can feel relatable and easy to explain at the same time. I tried to do a bit of story telling, try to show imaginary details like the 145th street and the trees that come alongside with it. I wanted you guys to feel the rush it feels like in the F and the A trains early in the morning, and the experience I feel throughout it. The main I tried to explore was the rythme of my poem cause I feel like its not that perfect in some of the case; also tried to shows the busy life of New York City overall as a student. I also tried to all like sounds of the trains, like the tunnels, speeding trains, the windows and the final walk through the college. The theme that continues in the overall poem is the consistency showing even some days I feel tired but I try, which makes every step counts for my growth. I also tried to show that I am kind of proud living here in the NYC. One part I’m kind of uncertain is the type I wrote it because I feel like some lines really doesn’t rhyme with the next one. Overall I wanted this poem to reflect my daily journey and share it with the class.

I hope you see the city’s pulse in every word, the way it hums through subway cars and crowded streets. My mornings start with Harlem’s glow, the 145th Street bustle pushing me forward. Even when the rhythm stumbles, like my tired feet some days, it’s real—it’s me. This city’s tough, but it’s mine, and every train ride carves my path to something bigger. I want you to feel that grind, that pride, and know each step I take is for my dreams.
